Mind your language

What is it you're saying?

While dealing with us, you will hear us use a lot of techno sounding Internet related jargon. It might be wise to read through the following to ensure you understand what we're talking about.

1. Uniform Resource Locator (URL), is a technical, Web-related term used in two distinct meanings:

In popular usage and many technical documents, it is a synonym for Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). In popular usage, it means a web page address such as http://www.o5webdesign.com

2. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) - this is most probably the term we wil hear us using the most. SEO is the art of making a website rank high in the Search Engine Results (SERPS). To explain - if you have Acorntree Guesthouse in Capetown, a person sitting in Canada visiting Capetown will not search for Acorntree Guesthouse, but will search for accommodation in Capetown, thus your site needs to be optimised for the correct search terms.

3. Links can be anything of 3 ways.

It is important to have a balance of the 3 types of links above. Read all about links here and here.

4. Meta tags are tags that you cannot see when looking at a website. These tags are present in a website's coding - that is the html coding in which the site is programmed. To see any website's coding - rightclick in the screen and click on view source. A notepad page will open showing the coding part. Meta tags consist of 3 main tags namely the title tag, the description tag, the keyword tag.

4.1. Title Tag - This is most probably the most important tag and is visible on your screen right at the top of the screen in the blue (or green depending on your pc settings) bar when a website is open in front of you. Right at the very top of your screen. When looking at Google's search results it is the blue part at the top of each result that is linked to the site.

4.2. Description Tag - this is not visible when viewing a site, but can be seen in the Google search results just below the title tag and is shown in black letters with some words or phrases in bold. These bold words refer directly to the search you did.

4.3. Keywords Tag - this is neither visible when viewing a site, nor in the search results. You can view the tag when rightclicking in a website and view source.

5. HTML coding - Hyper Text Markup Language is the predominant markup language for web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document — by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on — and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. HTML is written in the form of tags, surrounded by angle brackets. HTML can also describe, to some degree, the appearance and semantics of a document, and can include embedded scripting language code (such as JavaScript) which can affect the behavior of Web browsers and other HTML processors.
